This year the festival of Budh Purnima is being celebrated on Monday, May 16, 2022. It marks the birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. This day is also called Buddha Jayanti, or Vesak.
According to abplive.com, In Hinduism, Lord Buddha is considered an incarnation of Vishnu, so on this day, both the followers of Hinduism and Buddhism celebrate this festival with great reverence. Lord Buddha’s birth, his enlightenment, and his Mahaparinirvana, all three took place on the day of Vaishakh Purnima.
Lord Buddha was born as a prince named Siddhartha Gautama on the full moon date in 563 BC in Lumbini on the full moon day. His childhood name was Siddharth Gautam. Siddhartha Gautama later founded Buddhism and was called Mahatma Buddha. He renounced materialistic pleasures and extravagance at an early age.
He discovered the eternal truth after seeing human suffering. Years later after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath.
According to the scriptures, Vaishakh Purnima is considered to be the best among all. The full moon of every month is dedicated to Lord Hari Vishnu.
