Shri Krishna, the 8th human incarnation of Lord Vishnu, has many devotees. Do not know how many people are crazy about his devotion. The name ‘Sant Surdas’ also comes from one of the Krishna lovers, who has presented his love and devotion towards Shri Krishna in front of the whole world through his creations. Surdas Ji could not see with his eyes, but according to mythological beliefs, being pleased with the devotion of Surdas, Lord Krishna gave him a divine light, so that Surdas could easily read someone’s mind even if he did not have eyes. According to the Hindu calendar, Surdas Jayanti is celebrated every year on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month. This year Surdas Jayanti will be celebrated on Friday, May 6, 2022.
According to punjabkesari.in, Surdas was a great devotee of Lord Krishna. He was born in 1478 AD in a village called Runkata and this village is situated on the Mathura-Agra road. According to the Hindu calendar, he was born on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month. But on one hand, according to the belief, Surdas was born in a poor Saraswat Brahmin family in a village named Sihi. Later they started living in the village between Agra and Mathura. Surdas’s father Ramdas was a singer. Despite the lack of vision, the beauty with which he has composed the pastimes of Krishna looks very alive and beautiful. In his compositions, Surdas has made a beautiful adjustment to Bhakti Rasa and Shringar Rasa.
Initially, Surdas lived at Gaughan near Agra where he met Shri Vallabhacharya and became his disciple. He attained knowledge only under the umbrella of his Guru. Sant Surdas died in 1580 AD in Parsauli village near Govardhan. Surdas Jayanti is mainly celebrated in northern India in India. Lord Shri Krishna is worshiped on the day of Surdas Jayanti and along with that fast is also kept for Lord Shri Krishna on this day.
