Annually the first Thursday of May is marked as the National Day of Prayer in the United States with the aim of inviting people to pray for the nation. The day was first observed in 1952 under a joint resolution of the US Congress and signed into law by that time president President Harry S. Truman.
The National Day of Prayer has great importance, as it provides an opportunity to recognize and lead the way which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with pressing judgments. It stands as a call for us humans to submissively reach God, seeking His guidance for our heads and His dignity upon us.
The unanimous passage of the bill designating the National Day of Prayer as an annual occasion, indicates that prayer is as essential to us today as it was in the origin. Similar to Thanksgiving or Christmas, The national day of prayer is a nationwide observance inaugurated on all Hallmark calendars and observed annually around the country.
On this day, every year, local, state, and federal observances are held from morning in Maine to evening in Hawaii, uniting Americans from all races of life in prayer for nation. It is estimated that over two million people attended more than 30,000 observances organized each year by approximately 40,000 volunteers.
